Danish Pastries are known for their flaky and buttery texture, originating from Denmark. The secret to their delightful taste lies in the lamination process, where butter is meticulously folded into the dough to achieve a light and airy consistency. These pastries can be filled with a variety of sweet fillings such as fruit preserves, custard, or almond paste, offering a range of flavors. Suitable for breakfast, brunch, or a sweet snack paired with coffee or tea, Danish Pastries provide a delightful treat for various occasions, whether enjoyed fresh out of the oven or warmed up later.

Ingredients

  • 1 packet instant yeast
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk, warm
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup butter, cold

Instructions

  1. Dissolve the instant yeast in warm milk in a small bowl and let it sit for 5 minutes until slightly frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, sugar, and salt.
  3. Cut the cold butter into the flour mixture using a pastry cutter or fork until the mixture becomes crumbly.
  4. Stir in the yeast mixture until a dough forms. It should be slightly sticky.
  5. Cover the dough with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 4 hours or overnight to allow it to rise slowly.
  6. Roll out the chilled dough on a floured surface into a large rectangle, about 1/4 inch thick. Fold it into thirds, like a letter.
  7. Rotate the dough 90 degrees and roll out again, repeating the folding process two more times to create layers.
  8. Cut the layered dough into squares. Add desired fillings to the center of each square and fold the corners to shape the pastries.
  9. Place the shaped pastries on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Let them rise in a warm place for 30 minutes.
  10. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the pastries for 20 to 25 minutes until golden brown and puffed up.
  11. Allow the pastries to cool slightly and serve warm or at room temperature.
