This burger borrows the classic flavors of a Philly cheesesteak—sweet caramelized onions, soft bell peppers, and melted provolone—and piles them onto a seared beef patty. It's a hearty weeknight dinner or weekend cookout centerpiece that comes together in under an hour.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef, 80/20
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 4 slices provolone cheese
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise

Method

  1. In a 9-inch skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and bell pepper and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and golden brown, about 12 minutes.

  2. Transfer the onions and peppers to a bowl and set aside; wipe out the skillet.

  3. In a large bowl, gently mix the ground beef with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder until just combined. Divide into 4 equal portions and shape into patties slightly wider than the buns.

  4. Heat the olive oil in the skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook without pressing down, 4 minutes per side for medium doneness.

  5. Top each patty with a slice of provolone and a portion of the caramelized onion and pepper mixture. Cover the skillet and cook until the cheese melts, about 2 minutes.

  6. Spread mayonnaise on the cut sides of the hamburger buns.

  7. Place each cheesesteak patty on a bun bottom, pile with extra onions and peppers if desired, and close with the bun top. Serve immediately.
