  • 4 apples (such as Honeycrisp or Gala), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon water

  1. Peel, core, and slice the apples into 1/4-inch thick slices.

  2. Melt the butter in a 9-inch skillet over medium heat.

  3. Add the apple slices, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and water to the skillet and stir to coat.

  4. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender and the sauce has thickened into a glossy syrup, 12 to 15 minutes.

  5. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
