This classic equal-parts cocktail layers gin, orange liqueur, Lillet Blanc, and fresh lemon juice, with an absinthe rinse adding a faint anise edge. Shaken hard and served cold, it's a crisp, tart pre-dinner sip traditionally recommended as a hangover remedy. Its sharp citrus and herbal undertones make it a popular choice for brunch or as an aperitif.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 ounce absinthe, for rinsing the glass
  • 3/4 ounce gin
  • 3/4 ounce orange liqueur (such as Cointreau)
  • 3/4 ounce Lillet Blanc
  • 3/4 ounce fresh lemon juice
  • 1 orange peel or brandied cherry, for garnish
  • 1 cup ice cubes

Method

  1. Pour the absinthe into a chilled coupe glass and tilt and rotate it to coat the inside, then discard the excess absinthe.

  2. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice cubes, then add the gin, orange liqueur, Lillet Blanc, and fresh lemon juice.

  3. Shake vigorously for about 15 seconds, until the shaker feels very cold to the touch.

  4. Double strain the cocktail into the prepared coupe glass to remove any ice shards.

  5. Garnish with an orange peel twist or a brandied cherry and serve immediately.
