Extra-firm tofu is pressed, coated in a cornstarch crust, and baked until crisp without deep frying. A quick toss with soy sauce and garlic powder before coating builds savory flavor throughout. These make a satisfying snack or side, especially paired with a dipping sauce like ketchup, sriracha mayo, or peanut sauce.
Ingredients
- 2 blocks extra-firm tofu, pressed
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoons cooking spray or oil for brushing
Method
-
Wrap the pressed tofu blocks in paper towels, set a heavy pan or cutting board on top, and press for 15 minutes to remove excess water.
-
Preheat the oven to 425°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
-
Cut the pressed tofu into fry-shaped sticks, about 1/2 inch thick and 3 inches long.
-
In a large bowl, toss the tofu sticks gently with soy sauce and olive oil until evenly coated.
-
In a small bowl, whisk together the cornstarch, garlic powder, smoked paprika, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
-
Sprinkle the cornstarch mixture over the tofu sticks and toss carefully until each piece is evenly coated.
-
Arrange the coated tofu sticks in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between pieces, and lightly spray or brush with oil.
-
Bake for 15 minutes, then flip each piece and bake another 15 to 20 minutes, until golden and crisp on the edges.
-
Flip the tofu fries once more and bake 5 additional minutes if deeper color is desired, then remove from the oven.
-
Let the fries rest on the baking sheet for 2 minutes to crisp further, then serve hot with a dipping sauce of choice.
