Vodka, coffee liqueur, and freshly pulled espresso are shaken hard with ice to create a silky foam that caps the glass. Chilled and faintly bitter, it works equally well as a dinner party opener or a late-evening pick-me-up. The key is using hot-brewed espresso cooled briefly, which helps the shake produce that signature crema-like foam.

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces vodka
  • 1 ounce coffee liqueur
  • 1 ounce freshly brewed espresso, cooled slightly
  • 1/2 ounce simple syrup
  • 3 coffee beans, for garnish
  • 1 cup ice cubes

Method

  1. Brew a shot of espresso and let it cool for a few minutes so it won't melt the ice too quickly.

  2. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice cubes.

  3. Add the vodka, coffee liqueur, cooled espresso, and simple syrup to the shaker.

  4. Seal the shaker and shake vigorously for 15 to 20 seconds, until the outside feels very cold and frothy foam has formed.

  5. Double strain the cocktail into a chilled martini glass, holding back the ice to pour just the frothy liquid.

  6. Float three coffee beans on top of the foam as garnish and serve immediately.
