Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 packet dry yeast
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 2 whole eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp orange zest
  • 1 tsp ground cardamom
  • 1 cup powdered sugar, sifted for icing
  • 2-3 tbsp milk, for icing
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract, for icing
  • purple, green, and gold food coloring, for icing

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
  2. Heat the milk in a saucepan over medium heat until warm, then remove from heat and add the melted butter, stirring until combined.
  3. Pour the milk mixture into the dry ingredients and mix until well combined.
  4. Add eggs, vanilla extract, orange zest, and ground cardamom to the mixture, stirring until a smooth batter forms.
  5. Gradually add the remaining flour, mixing until a soft dough begins to form.
  6. Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 5 to 7 minutes.
  7. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 to 1.5 hours.
  8. Punch down the risen dough and shape it into a ring on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  9. Cover the shaped dough and let it rise again in a warm place until puffed, approximately 30 to 45 minutes.
  10. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the cake for 25 to 30 minutes until golden brown.
  11. Allow the cake to cool on a wire rack before icing.
  12. For the icing, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Divide into three bowls and tint each with a different food coloring.
  13. Drizzle the colorful icing over the cooled cake and decorate with additional purple, green, and gold sugars if desired.
