- 1 small onion, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 28 ounces canned crushed tomatoes
- 2 cups chicken broth
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup fresh basil leaves, loosely packed, plus more for garnish
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
