This simple infusion captures saffron's deep amber hue and floral, honeyed aroma, forming a base used in biryanis, desserts, and festive drinks. Gently warming the threads before steeping helps draw out more color and fragrance than steeping in cold water alone. Keep it on hand for a quick way to add signature saffron flavor to rice, syrups, or baked goods.
Ingredients
- 1/2 teaspoon saffron threads
- 1/2 cup warm water
Method
-
Place the saffron threads in a small heatproof bowl and crush lightly between your fingers to help release their color and aroma.
-
Warm the water until hot to the touch but not boiling, then pour it over the saffron threads.
-
Let the mixture steep at room temperature until the water turns deep golden-orange and the aroma is fragrant.
-
Stir once more and use immediately, or transfer to a small jar and refrigerate for up to a week.
