This sweet and sour mix balances fresh lemon and lime juice with simple syrup for a bright, tangy base that upgrades margaritas, whiskey sours, and other citrus-forward cocktails. Making it from scratch avoids the cloying sweetness and artificial flavor of bottled versions, and it keeps well refrigerated for easy use throughout the week.
Ingredients
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice
- 1/2 cup fresh lime juice
Method
-
In a small saucepan, combine the sugar and water and bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring until the sugar fully dissolves.
-
Remove the simple syrup from the heat and let it cool to room temperature, about 30 minutes.
-
While the syrup cools, squeeze the lemons and limes to measure 1/2 cup each of fresh juice, straining out any seeds and pulp.
-
In a pitcher or large jar, whisk together the cooled simple syrup, lemon juice, and lime juice until fully combined.
-
Pour the mix into a sealable bottle or mason jar and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before using to let the flavors meld.
-
Store refrigerated for up to two weeks, shaking well before each use.
