Paratha

Paratha is a popular Indian flatbread known for its delightful layers and savory taste. Crafted from whole wheat flour and ghee, this adaptable bread pairs wonderfully with curries, chutneys, or can be savored alone. The artistry of creating paratha lies in layering the dough with ghee, folding it repeatedly, and rolling it thin before frying on a hot griddle. Suitable for any meal, Paratha offers a comforting and flavorful experience that enhances any dining occasion.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 2 tbsp ghee
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tbsp ghee, for frying

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, ghee, and salt.
  2. Gradually add water while kneading the mixture into a smooth dough. Allow it to rest covered for 20 minutes.
  3. Divide the dough into equal-sized balls. Roll each ball out into a thin circle using a rolling pin.
  4. Brush the surface of the circle with ghee, fold it in half, and then fold it again to form a triangle.
  5. Using a rolling pin, gently roll out the triangle to form a thin circle again.
  6. Preheat a griddle over medium heat. Place a paratha on the griddle and cook, applying ghee on each side, until it turns golden brown and develops a flaky texture.
  7. Remove from the griddle and serve warm with curry or chutney.
