Ingredients
- 1 cup black lentils
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 inch piece ginger, grated
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 1 tsp red chili powder
- 2 Tbsp ghee
- 4 cups water
- salt
Instructions
- Rinse the lentils thoroughly and soak them in water for 30 minutes.
- In a pot, heat ghee over medium heat and add cumin seeds. Once they splutter, add the chopped onions, minced garlic, and grated ginger. Saute for about 5 minutes until the onions are translucent.
- Stir in turmeric powder, coriander powder, and red chili powder. Cook for another minute to let the spices release their aroma.
- Drain the soaked lentils and add them to the pot. Pour in the water and season lightly with salt.
- Cook on low heat until the lentils are soft and creamy, stirring occasionally, for about 35 to 40 minutes.
- If the mixture becomes too thick, adjust the consistency by adding more water as needed. Taste and adjust salt if necessary. Serve with rice or naan.
