  • 2 cups water

Instructions

  1. Rinse the split peas and soak them in water for at least 2 hours to soften them.
  2. In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat until shimmering.
  3. Add the onion, garlic, and ginger. Sauté for about 5 minutes until the onion is translucent and fragrant.
  4. Stir in the berbere spice blend and cayenne pepper, cooking for another minute to release their flavors.
  5. Drain and add the soaked split peas to the pot along with the water. Season with salt and pepper.
  6. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 30 minutes or until the peas are tender and the mixture thickens slightly.
