Indian Naan Bread is a beloved traditional flatbread within Indian cuisine, known for its soft and fluffy texture with a slight chew. Crafted from simple ingredients like flour, yeast, yogurt, and ghee, the dough is rolled out and cooked in a hot skillet or tandoor to achieve perfect results. This versatile bread complements dishes such as curries, kebabs, or even international dips. Ideal for both seasoned bakers and those new to bread-making, this recipe offers a clear path to creating authentic naan at home.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp ghee, melted

Instructions

  1. Mix the warm water, sugar, and yeast in a bowl. Let it rest for 5 minutes until it becomes foamy.
  2. Add the flour, yogurt, salt, and melted ghee to the yeast mixture. Knead until a smooth dough forms.
  3. Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
  4. Divide the risen dough into 6 equal pieces and shape each into a ball.
  5. On a lightly floured surface, roll out each ball into a teardrop shape, about 1/4 inch thick.
  6. Preheat a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook each naan for about 2 minutes on each side, until browned spots appear.
  7. Brush each naan with a little ghee before serving warm.
