Dal Tadka

Dal Tadka is a beloved Indian dish made with yellow lentils and enriched with a flavorful tempering of spices. Ingredients

  • 1 cup yellow lentils
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 Tbsp ghee
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 whole dried red chilies
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • salt
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 Tbsp fresh coriander leaves, chopped

Instructions

  1. Rinse the lentils under running water until the water runs clear.
  2. In a pressure cooker, add the lentils, turmeric powder, water, and a pinch of salt. Cook for 4-5 whistles or until the lentils are soft.
  3. In a pan, heat the ghee over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  4. Add the minced garlic and dried red chilies, and sauté until the garlic turns golden brown.
  5. Stir in the coriander powder and continue to sauté for another minute.
  6. Pour this tempering over the cooked lentils, mixing thoroughly to combine flavors.
  7. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves before serving.
  8. Serve hot with rice or bread.
