Multigrain Flax Bagels are a wholesome treat made with whole grains and flax seeds, which provide a nutritious addition to the classic bagel. These bagels offer a chewy texture paired with a subtly nutty flavor, making them a delightful option for breakfast or as a snack. Toast them and add your favorite spread or use them as a base for sandwiches. Their mix of whole wheat flour and ground flax seeds makes them a flavorful and nutritious alternative, perfect for those looking to enjoy a heartier and healthier version of traditional bagels.

Ingredients

  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 2 Tbsp honey
  • 3 1/2 cups bread flour
  • 3/4 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup ground flax seeds
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 Tbsp cornmeal

Instructions

  1. Dissolve yeast in warm water with honey in a small bowl. Let the mixture stand until it becomes creamy, about 10 minutes.
  2. In a large bowl, combine bread flour, whole wheat flour, ground flax seeds, and salt.
  3. Stir in the yeast mixture to form a stiff dough.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth, which takes about 5-7 minutes.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise until it doubles in size, about 1 hour.
  6. Punch down the dough and divide it into 6 portions. Shape each portion into a bagel shape.
  7. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  8. Bring a large pot of water to a boil and add cornmeal to it.
  9. Boil the bagels in the water for 1 minute per side. Remove them and place them on a baking sheet.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, until they turn golden brown.
