Nammoura, also known as Basbousa, is a traditional Middle Eastern dessert treasured for its sweet flavor and distinctive texture. This semolina cake is soaked in a fragrant sugar syrup, giving it a moist and syrupy consistency that melts in the mouth. Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cup semolina
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup coconut, shredded
- 1/2 cup almonds, sliced
- 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 cup milk
- 1 Tbsp baking powder
- 1 tsp rosewater
- 1 cup sugar, for the syrup
- 1 cup water, for the syrup
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- In a large bowl, mix together the semolina, sugar, coconut, almonds, melted butter, milk, and baking powder until well combined.
- Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread it evenly with a spatula.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until golden brown on top.
- While the cake is baking, prepare the syrup by combining the sugar and water in a saucepan. Bring it to a boil over medium heat, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for 10 minutes.
- Remove the syrup from the heat and stir in the rosewater.
- Once the cake is baked, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the hot syrup evenly over the hot cake.
- Allow the cake to cool completely in the pan. Once cooled, cut into diamond-shaped pieces.
- Serve the Nammoura at room temperature.
