Its visually appealing shape and savory taste add a special touch to any meal.
Ingredients
- 1 packet active dry yeast
- 1 1/4 cups warm water
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup sun-dried tomatoes, chopped
- 1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped
- 2 tbsp olive oil
Instructions
- In a small bowl, dissolve the active dry yeast in warm water with sugar. Let sit for about 5 minutes until the mixture is foamy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture, sun-dried tomatoes, fresh basil, and olive oil. Mix until a dough begins to form.
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for 5 to 7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Punch down the risen dough and shape it into a flat oval on a baking sheet. Use a knife to slash the top of the dough, creating a leaf pattern.
- Let the dough rise again for approximately 20 minutes. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes or until the fougasse is golden brown and cooked through.
- Allow to cool slightly before serving.
