Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a cupcake pan with 24 liners.
- In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In a separate large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
- Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk and sour cream, beginning and ending with flour.
- Divide the batter among the cupcake liners, filling each about 2/3 full.
- Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool completely.
- For the frosting, beat the butter until creamy, then gradually add powdered sugar, alternating with milk, until smooth.
- Stir in the vanilla extract and divide frosting into three portions. Tint one portion red, one blue, and leave one white.
- Decorate cooled cupcakes with frosting using a piping bag, creating red, white, and blue designs.
