Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a cupcake pan with 24 liners.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk and sour cream, beginning and ending with flour.
  6. Divide the batter among the cupcake liners, filling each about 2/3 full.
  7. Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool completely.
  8. For the frosting, beat the butter until creamy, then gradually add powdered sugar, alternating with milk, until smooth.
  9. Stir in the vanilla extract and divide frosting into three portions. Tint one portion red, one blue, and leave one white.
  10. Decorate cooled cupcakes with frosting using a piping bag, creating red, white, and blue designs.
