Aish El-Saraya, or ‘palace bread,’ is a delightful Lebanese dessert that blends creamy custard with syrup-soaked bread. The preparation involves layering soft bread slices with a rich custard topped with a fragrant orange blossom syrup. Ingredients

  • 12 oz white bread slices
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 Tbsp orange blossom water
  • 1/4 cup pistachios, chopped

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, combine 2 cups of milk, 1/2 cup of sugar, and 1/4 cup of cornstarch over medium heat. Cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens, approximately 5 to 7 minutes.
  2. Remove from heat and stir in 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Let the custard cool slightly, about 10 minutes.
  3. Line a baking dish with 6 ounces of white bread slices. Pour half of the custard over the bread, spreading it evenly.
  4. Add another layer with the remaining 6 ounces of bread slices and top with the remaining custard, ensuring even coverage.
  5. Refrigerate the dessert for at least 2 hours to allow it to set properly.
  6. In a small saucepan, heat 1/2 cup of sugar with 1/4 cup of water over medium heat until syrupy, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in 1 tablespoon of orange blossom water.
  7. Pour the syrup evenly over the chilled dessert and garnish with 1/4 cup of chopped pistachios.
  8. Serve the Aish El-Saraya chilled.
