The Old Fashioned is a celebrated cocktail that brilliantly combines the richness of bourbon with the sweetness of sugar and the complex flavors of bitters, highlighted by a zesty citrus peel. The essence of its preparation lies in the careful muddling of sugar with bitters, ensuring a smooth blend before the addition of bourbon and ice. This cocktail caters to those who appreciate a refined and robust drink, encapsulating simplicity with depth in each sip.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz bourbon, preferred choice
  • 1 tsp sugar, granulated
  • 2 dashes bitters, aromatic
  • 1 piece citrus peel, orange or lemon

Instructions

  1. Place sugar and bitters in a sturdy mixing glass.
  2. Using a muddler, press down on the sugar and bitters until the sugar is mostly dissolved.
  3. Pour the bourbon over the muddled mixture.
  4. Add a handful of ice cubes to the mixing glass and stir briskly for about 30 seconds to chill and dilute the mixture slightly.
  5. Strain the liquid into a rocks glass filled with fresh ice.
  6. Hold the citrus peel over the glass, and with a sharp twist, express the oils over the drink. Drop the peel into the glass as garnish.
