This spooky red velvet cake features a unique bleeding effect, ideal for Halloween or gothic-themed parties.
Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon white vinegar
- 1 ounce red food coloring
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup raspberry sauce
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, and salt. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
- Mix in the vanilla extract and red food coloring until fully incorporated.
- Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour. Mix until smooth.
- In a small bowl, combine baking soda and vinegar, then quickly fold into the cake batter.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- For the icing, beat cream cheese and powdered sugar together until smooth. Stir in vanilla extract.
- Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread with a thin layer of icing. Add about 1/2 cup of raspberry sauce, spreading it to the edges.
- Top with the second cake layer. Frost the top and sides of the cake with the remaining icing.
- Drizzle the remaining raspberry sauce over the cake, letting it drip down the sides for a bleeding effect. Serve and enjoy.
