Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons butter, divided
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 8 slices sourdough bread
- 1 cup Gruyère cheese, grated
- 4 tablespoons fig jam
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a skillet over medium heat.
- Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and caramelized, about 20 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
- Spread fig jam on one side of each bread slice.
- Divide the Gruyère cheese evenly among four slices of bread, on the opposite side of the jam.
- Pile caramelized onions on top of the cheese, then top with remaining bread slices, jam side in.
- Heat the remaining butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Place sandwiches in the skillet and cook until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted, about 4-5 minutes per side.
