Chocolate Babka is an indulgent sweet bread known for its rich swirls of chocolate and a luscious sweet syrup glaze. The recipe requires care, with the dough rising twice to create a light, airy texture that complements the rich, buttery layers. This delectable treat is often enjoyed during special occasions or weekend brunches, offering a harmonious balance of flavors and textures. The combination of buttery dough and gooey chocolate is a timeless favorite, making it a delightful addition to any festive spread or leisurely morning.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 Tbsp active dry yeast
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 10 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add the all-purpose flour, eggs, softened butter, and salt to the yeast mixture. Knead until a soft dough forms, about 10 minutes.
  3. Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rise in a warm area for 1 hour, until doubled in size. Punch down the dough and let it rise again for another hour.
  4. Roll out the dough on a floured surface into a large rectangle, approximately 1/4 inch thick. Evenly distribute the chocolate chips across the surface.
  5. Carefully roll the dough into a log from the long side, ensuring the seam is sealed.
  6. Cut the log lengthwise down the middle and twist the two halves together with the cut sides facing upward. Transfer the twisted dough into a greased loaf pan.
  7. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Bake the babka for 40 minutes until golden brown and cooked through.
  8. While the babka is baking, prepare a simple syrup by heating equal parts water and sugar until the sugar is dissolved. Brush the syrup over the babka while it’s still warm.
