Ingredients

  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 3/4 cup warm milk
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1 cup chopped dark chocolate
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm milk until foamy, about 5 minutes.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine granulated sugar and 3 cups of all-purpose flour.
  3. Add the yeast mixture, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 5 to 7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 2 hours until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough and roll it out into a rectangle on a floured surface.
  7. Spread the chopped walnuts, chopped dark chocolate, and brown sugar evenly over the dough.
  8. Carefully roll up the dough tightly from one end and slice it in half lengthwise.
  9. Twist the two pieces together, creating a braid-like shape, and transfer to a greased loaf pan.
  10. Cover with a towel and let rise in a warm place for another 30 minutes.
  11. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  12. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, until the babka is golden brown on top.
  13. Let cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool slightly before slicing and serving.
