Creamy and fragrant, this homemade orange cardamom ice cream combines vibrant orange flavor with a hint of spice.
Ingredients
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 cup whole milk
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon orange zest
- 1/2 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
- 4 egg yolks
Instructions
- In a saucepan over medium heat, combine heavy cream, whole milk, and sugar. Stir until the sugar is dissolved.
- Add ground cardamom, vanilla extract, and orange zest. Mix well and heat until just about to simmer.
- In a separate bowl, whisk egg yolks. Slowly drizzle in 1 cup of the hot cream mixture to temper the yolks, whisking constantly.
- Pour the tempered yolk mixture back into the saucepan with the remaining cream mixture.
- Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens slightly and coats the back of a spoon.
- Remove from heat and stir in freshly squeezed orange juice. Allow the mixture to cool at room temperature.
- Refrigerate for at least 2 hours or until completely cold.
- Pour chilled mixture into an ice cream maker and churn according to manufacturer's instructions.
- Transfer to a lidded container and freeze for at least 4 hours before serving.
