  3. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat to low. Cover the pot and simmer for about 2 hours, stirring occasionally until beans are tender and the stew is thick.
  4. Remove bay leaves and discard. Adjust seasoning by adding salt and pepper to taste before serving.
