The Classic Cubano with Pickles, also known as the Cuban Sandwich, is a beloved sandwich from Cuban immigrant communities in Florida. It features roasted pork, ham, Swiss cheese, pickles, mustard, and sometimes salami, all layered and pressed between crispy, buttery bread. These flavors come together to create a savory meal suitable for both lunch and casual dinners. This recipe is ideal for those who appreciate Cuban cuisine or are in search of a flavorful sandwich.
Ingredients
- 1 loaf Cuban bread or French bread, sliced lengthwise
- 1/2 lb roasted pork, thinly sliced
- 1/4 lb ham, thinly sliced
- 8 slices Swiss cheese
- 1/4 cup mustard
- 1/4 cup pickles, thinly sliced
- 1/4 lb salami, thinly sliced
Instructions
- Preheat a sandwich press or cast-iron skillet over medium heat.
- Spread mustard evenly on one half of the bread. Layer the roasted pork, ham, Swiss cheese, pickles, and salami (if using) on top of the mustard-spread bread.
- Close the sandwich with the remaining bread half, then spread butter on the outside surfaces of the sandwich.
- Place the sandwich in the preheated press or skillet. Cook until the bread is golden and crispy and the cheese has melted, approximately 5 minutes on each side.
- Remove the sandwich from the skillet or press and slice it diagonally before serving.
