Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound Italian sausage
  • 1 cup onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 28 oz crushed tomatoes
  • 2 Tbsp tomato paste
  • 1/4 cup basil, chopped
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 15 oz ricotta cheese
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 1 whole egg, beaten
  • 12 oz lasagna noodles
  • 2 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large skillet, heat until the beef and sausage begin to brown. Add the onion and garlic, cooking until the meat is fully browned and the onions are soft; drain any excess fat.
  3. Combine the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, chopped basil, salt, and black pepper in the skillet. Allow to simmer for about 5 minutes, letting the flavors meld.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix together the ricotta cheese, one cup of shredded mozzarella, grated Parmesan, and the beaten egg until well blended.
  5. Pour one cup of the meat sauce into a 9×13-inch baking dish, spreading it evenly at the bottom.
  6. Place a layer of lasagna noodles over the sauce. Top with half of the ricotta cheese mixture, followed by a layer of meat sauce, and then a layer of shredded mozzarella. Repeat the layering process.
  7. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.
  8. Remove the foil and continue to bake for another 25 minutes, or until the top is bubbly and browned.
  9. Allow the lasagna to rest for about 15 minutes before slicing. This helps the layers set and makes serving easier.
