Costco’s viral sheet cakes have taken over TikTok — and therefore, our dessert daydreams. But rather than brave the holiday crowds at big-box stores, we’re re-creating the trend at home. Sprinkles, sponge, spectacular frosting, this homemade version is the stuff Fourth of July parties (and late-night cravings) are made of. Let freedom and those endorphins ring.

Ingredients

• 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
• 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
• 1/2 tsp salt
• 1 1/2 cups sugar
• 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
• 4 large eggs
• 2 tsp vanilla extract
• 1 cup milk
• 1/2 cup rainbow sprinkles, plus more for decorating
• Buttercream frosting (homemade or store-bought)

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans. (If you’re wanting the sheet cake version, double the recipe and use a greased extra-large sheet cake pan.)
2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
3. In a separate bowl, use a mixer to cream the sugar and butter until the mixture is light and fluffy.
4. Add the eggs one at a time, fully incorporating each before adding the next.
5. Stir in the vanilla extract.
6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the milk, and mix until just combined.
7. Gently fold in the rainbow sprinkles without overmixing.
8. Evenly distribute the batter between the two prepared cake pans (or pour into the sheet cake pan).
9. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of each cake comes out clean.
10. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
11. Once cooled, apply an even layer of buttercream frosting to the top of one cake layer, add the second cake layer on top, and then frost the entire exterior of the cake.
12. Decorate with additional sprinkles if desired and serve at room temperature for best flavor.
