Ingredients

  • 1 cup walnuts, chopped
  • 1 cup dried figs, chopped
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 lb phyllo dough, thawed
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 tsp rose water

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Mix together the walnuts, figs, and cinnamon in a bowl.
  3. Brush a 9×13-inch baking dish with some melted butter.
  4. Lay a sheet of phyllo dough in the dish and brush with melted butter. Repeat with 7 more sheets, brushing each with butter.
  5. Spread half of the walnut mixture over the phyllo layers evenly.
  6. Layer 8 more sheets of phyllo dough on top, brushing each with butter.
  7. Spread the remaining walnut mixture over the phyllo dough evenly.
  8. Top with the remaining phyllo sheets, brushing each with butter.
  9. Cut the baklava into diamond shapes using a sharp knife.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes or until golden brown.
  11. While the baklava bakes, combine sugar, water, honey, and rose water in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 20 minutes.
  12. As soon as the baklava is out of the oven, pour the hot syrup evenly over it.
  13. Allow the baklava to cool completely at room temperature before serving.
