Chou Farci, which means ‘stuffed cabbage’ in French, is a comforting dish perfect for colder days. The recipe involves blanching cabbage leaves, filling them with a mixture of seasoned ground meat, rice, and fresh herbs, then baking until tender and flavorful. The combination of soft cabbage and savory filling, topped with a rich tomato sauce, results in a wholesome meal. It’s often served with crusty bread and a simple green salad for a balanced and enjoyable dinner.
Ingredients
- 1 whole large cabbage, cored and leaves separated
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1/2 cup long-grain rice, uncooked
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 14 oz can tomato sauce
- 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil and blanch the cabbage leaves for 3-4 minutes. Drain and set aside to cool slightly.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, rice, onion, garlic, parsley, and a pinch of salt and pepper.
- Place a spoonful of the meat mixture onto the base of each blanched cabbage leaf. Fold the sides over the filling and roll up tightly from the stem end.
- Arrange the stuffed cabbage rolls seam side down in a baking dish.
- Pour the tomato sauce evenly over the cabbage rolls. Cover the dish tightly with foil.
- Bake for 45-50 minutes until the cabbage rolls are tender and the filling is cooked through.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes until the tops are lightly browned.
- Serve the Chou Farci hot, optionally garnished with fresh parsley.
