This tender Fig and Port Wine Braised Brisket is an elegant choice for special occasions or a comforting family dinner. Slow-cooked to perfection, the brisket absorbs the rich flavors of a sauce made with figs and port wine, resulting in a dish that’s both flavorful and satisfying. Pair it with creamy mashed potatoes or buttery polenta to maximize the enjoyment of the sauce.

Ingredients

  • 3 lb beef brisket
  • 1 cup dried figs, halved
  • 1 cup port wine
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tsp dried thyme
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 325°F (160°C).
  2. In a Dutch oven, heat olive oil over medium-high heat.
  3. Sear the brisket on all sides until browned, about 4 minutes per side.
  4. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the pot, cooking until softened, about 5 minutes.
  5. Stir in the figs, port wine, beef broth, and dried thyme. Season with salt and black pepper.
  6. Bring the mixture to a simmer, cover the pot, and transfer it to the preheated oven.
  7. Braise the brisket for 2.5 to 3 hours, or until it is fork-tender.
  8. Once cooked, remove the brisket from the pot and allow it to rest for a few minutes before slicing against the grain.
  9. Return the sliced brisket to the pot, ensuring it’s coated with the fig and port wine sauce.
  10. Serve the brisket with the sauce and your choice of sides.
