  • 4 slices French baguette
  • 1 cup Gruyère cheese, grated

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, melt butter over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 45 minutes until they are deeply golden brown and caramelized.
  2. Sprinkle sugar over the onions and cook for an additional 5 minutes to enhance caramelization.
  3. Add beef broth, white wine, thyme, salt, and pepper to the pot. Bring to a simmer and let it cook for 15 minutes.
  4. Preheat the broiler to high. Ladle the soup into oven-safe bowls. Top each bowl with a slice of baguette and a generous amount of Gruyère cheese.
  5. Place the bowls on a baking sheet and broil for about 2-3 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Carefully remove from the oven.
  6. Allow to cool slightly before serving.
