Portuguese Caramel Flan, known as Pudim Flan, offers a luxurious blend of silky texture and rich caramel flavor. This traditional Portuguese dessert requires minimal effort and rewards with a creamy custard layered over a deep, amber caramel. The process involves creating a caramel sauce, preparing a smooth custard mix, and baking it gently in a water bath to achieve the desired consistency. Whether for a special occasion or a simple indulgence, this Caramel Flan promises a delightful experience that will cater to any sweet cravings.
Ingredients
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup water
- 2 cups milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 4 large eggs
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C).
- In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine sugar and water. Cook without stirring until the mixture turns a deep amber color, about 10 minutes.
- Carefully pour the caramel into a flan mold, swirling to coat the bottom evenly. Set aside to cool slightly.
- In a large bowl, whisk together milk, vanilla extract, and eggs until well combined and smooth.
- Gently pour the custard mixture over the cooled caramel in the flan mold.
- Place the flan mold in a larger baking dish. Pour hot water into the baking dish until it reaches halfway up the sides of the flan mold, creating a water bath.
- Bake the flan for 50 minutes or until the edges are set and the center is slightly jiggly.
- Remove the flan from the oven, allowing it to cool at room temperature. Then refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight to set fully.
- To unmold, run a knife around the edges of the flan. Place a serving plate over the mold and invert it to release the flan onto the plate.
- Slice and serve chilled.
