Simple Black Sesame Tang Yuan is a traditional Chinese dessert made from glutinous rice flour filled with sweet black sesame paste. These chewy balls are often savored during festivals and special occasions. The process involves shaping the dough into small balls, filling them with sesame paste, and boiling them until they float to the surface. The dessert is then served in a warm ginger syrup, creating a delightful combination of flavors and textures. With its smooth and chewy exterior and aromatic filling, this dessert balances taste and tradition harmoniously.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup glutinous rice flour
  • 1/2 cup black sesame seeds, ground
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 Tbsp hot water
  • 4 cups water
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 4 slices ginger

Instructions

  1. Mix 1 cup glutinous rice flour with 2 Tbsp hot water in a bowl to form a smooth dough. If the dough is too dry, add water a teaspoon at a time.
  2. In a separate bowl, combine 1/2 cup ground black sesame seeds with 1/4 cup sugar to create the filling.
  3. Divide the dough into small walnut-sized balls. Flatten each ball and place a teaspoon of the sesame filling in the center.
  4. Carefully seal the filling inside the dough by pinching the edges together, ensuring no filling is exposed.
  5. Bring 4 cups of water to a boil in a pot. Gently add the tang yuan balls and cook until they float to the surface, then let them cook for another 2 minutes.
  6. While the tang yuan is cooking, prepare the ginger syrup in a separate pot by simmering 4 cups water with 1/4 cup brown sugar and 4 slices of ginger for about 10 minutes.
  7. Once the tang yuan is cooked, transfer them to bowls and ladle the warm ginger syrup over them.
  8. Serve and enjoy the Simple Black Sesame Tang Yuan while warm.
