Tea eggs are a popular snack in Chinese cuisine known for their unique flavor and visually appealing marbled design. These hard-boiled eggs are simmered in a fragrant blend of tea, soy sauce, and spices, creating a savory snack that is both nutritious and delicious. The flavors of black tea, soy sauce, and aromatic spices infuse the eggs, resulting in a complex umami taste. Tea eggs make a versatile addition to meals and are perfect for packing in lunchboxes or serving as appetizers. Their distinctive taste and appearance offer an enjoyable culinary experience.
Ingredients
- 6 large eggs
- 2 bags black tea
- 1/2 cup soy sauce
- 1 whole cinnamon stick
- 2 whole star anise
- 1 Tbsp sugar
Instructions
- Place the eggs in a pot and cover with cold water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
- Remove the eggs from the pot and submerge them in a bowl of ice water to cool completely. Once the eggs have cooled, gently tap them with a spoon to crack the shells all over, being careful not to peel them.
- In a separate pot, combine the black tea bags, soy sauce, cinnamon stick, star anise, sugar, and 4 cups of water. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat.
- Add the cracked eggs to the tea mixture, reduce the heat to low, cover, and allow them to simmer for 1 hour.
- Once the cooking time is complete, remove the pot from heat and allow the eggs to cool in the liquid. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight to enhance the flavor.
- Before serving, peel the eggs to reveal the marbled pattern created by the cracking process.
