Tonkatsu is a traditional Japanese dish featuring breaded and deep-fried pork cutlets known for their crispy exterior and tender interior. This dish is cherished both in Japan and globally for its delightful texture and flavor. The preparation involves carefully tenderizing the pork, applying a precise breading technique, and utilizing a deep-frying method for optimal results. Often served with tonkatsu sauce, shredded cabbage, rice, or miso soup, tonkatsu offers a delectable dining experience any time.
Ingredients
- 4 whole pork loin chops, boneless
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 whole eggs, beaten
- 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
Instructions
- Pound the pork loin chops to tenderize and flatten them to about 1/2 inch thickness.
- Lightly season the pork chops with a pinch of salt and pepper on both sides.
- Prepare three shallow dishes: one with flour, one with beaten eggs, and one with panko breadcrumbs.
- Dredge each pork chop in flour, shaking off excess. Then dip in beaten eggs, ensuring full coverage, and coat thoroughly with panko breadcrumbs.
- In a skillet, heat vegetable oil over medium heat until shimmering, approximately 350°F (175°C).
- Carefully place breaded pork chops in the hot oil and fry until golden brown and cooked through, about 4-5 minutes per side. Check for an internal temperature of 145°F (63°C).
- Transfer the fried pork chops to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
- Slice the tonkatsu into strips and serve with tonkatsu sauce, shredded cabbage, and steamed rice.
